Amazing
Stories is credited as being the first magazine of any kind devoted
to the publication of science fiction stories. It began on April,
1926 and ceased publication with the Winter, 1995 issue. It was
briefly resurrected from 1998 until 2000, and then once again for
a few issues between 2004 and 2005. The last issue was the March
2005 issue.
There
were numerous title changes throughout its run: from April 1926
until February 1958 it went by Amazing Stories. For two issues it
was re-titled as Amazing Science Fiction and then from May 1958
until September 1960 it was titled Amazing Science Fiction Stories.
It then reverted to Amazing Stories until July 1970, when it returned
to the Amazing Science Fiction Stories title. With the May 1979
issue it once again returned to Amazing Stories, until August of
1980. It then merged with Fantastic and carried that title on the
cover as Amazing Science Fiction Stories combined with Fantastic,
until November 1984. This was then briefly changed to Amazing Science
Fiction Stories Combined with Fantastic Stories. It once again reverted
to Amazing Science Fiction Stories with the May 1985 issue and retained
this title through January 1986, at which time it finally returned
to its original title - Amazing Stories, with the March 1986 issue.
Fantastic
started with the Summer 1952 issue and retained that title through
April 1955, when it was retitled as Fantastic Science Fiction Stories.
It carried that title through the September 1960 issue, when it
was renamed as Fantastic Stories of Imagination. This continued
until the January 1979 issue, when it was retitled as Fantastic
Science Fiction with the April 1979 issue. It retained that title
until it was merged with Amazing, following the October 1980 issue.
Amazing
Stories Annual only had a single issue. It was replaced by Amazing
Stories Quarterly following the first issue.
Amazing
Stories Quarterly was published from Winter 1928 until the Fall
1934 issue. It was then resurrected with a Winter 1940 issue and
ran through the Winter, 1943 issue when it was discontinued. It
was resurrected once again with the Winter 1947 issue and was published
until the Spring, 1951 issue when it was discontinued.
Amazing
was an 'ashcan' issue, probably used to secure trademark rights.
Amazing
Stories Science Fiction Novels only had a single issue.
The
Canadian edition of Amazing Stories was a reprint that was published
from 1933 until 1935.
The
British edition of Amazing Stories had two renditions, the first
was a single issue in November 1946, the second published from June
1950 until November 1955. |
