COF

The Crotchety Old Fan is Steve Davidson.

I’ve been a science fiction fan since forever, cutting my teeth on Robert Heinlein’s Starman Jones (not to mention other YA staples of the baby-boomer generation, such as A Wrinkle in Time and The Runaway Robot) and the classics by Wells, Verne, Shelley and Stoker.

Fannish credits include managing the Hugo Banquet at Suncon, the 35th Worldcon, heading up security at a Balticon in the mid-70s, catching a fruit bat in my digger hat at Iguanacon, the 36th Worldcon and editing a semi-prozine while at college (Contact:SF).

I’ve spent a number of years writing and editing in the extreme sports world, culminating with the recent publication of my third book about the sport of Paintball, A Parent’s Guide to Paintball, published by Liaison Press, which was release in May of 2009.? I also currently edit a news and information website for that sport, 68Caliber.com.

In addition to the COF daily blog, I also maintain the CLASSIC SCIENCE FICTION CHANNEL, an irregularly updated blog for links to free (and legal) online SF content, including movies, television shows, radio programs and texts.

I’ve also recently returned to writing reviews, some of which can be found here and elsewhere on the web (SFReader, Tangentonline, RayGunRevival), non-fiction articles concerning the field and fiction. (Two flash pieces have so far appeared on 365Tomorrows.)

And finally, I’m married to the lovely Karen (five years now!) and maintain a household in southern New Hampshire that is also the home of Stimpy a 19 year old half Maine Coon cat and Bo, the Rocket Dog, a four year old Yorkshire Terrier.

I can easily be reached via email

  1. Like the blog! I’ve posted a link to it on my blog. :)

As for your favorite authors, I must admit, to my shame, that I’ve only ever read Asimov. :( Even then I only really liked his short stories and not his novels. Sadly, the only sci-fi I tend to be into these days is Doctor Who and Battlestar Galactica, though I’ve still a weakness for Star Trek and Star Wars. I just find that most other sci-fi tends to really annoy me, especially almost anything broadcast on the Sci-Fi Channel. You know, their one-word-title movies about the monster-of-the-week devouring a small town or whatever. Awful.

  2. Oh, and at first I read Cordwainer Smith as Cordwainer Bird and was about to make a smart-ass reply about how Bird’s writing puts me too much in mind of Harlan Ellison’s. ;)

  4. Crothety Steve – I’m in the same generation as yourself, read the same stuff, morn the loss of lots of books and pulps, follow your blog daily. I’ve put you on the blogroll at my (new) blog, hopefully it’s worth a quick look even if I haven’t had time for any scfi-fantasy content yet. At some point in time, perhaps you’ll drop by.
