What I Have To Be Thankful For

Happy Thanksgiving Day to all of you who are able to enjoy one.

I thought I’d just lay out a few of the things (traditional and otherwise) that I have to be thankful for on this day when, in addition to pigging out (if we are able to afford it), we are supposed to remember what is really important in our lives.

Hewing to tradition, I am thankful for my wonderful wife – Karen – decided to spend her life with me, despite (or perhaps because) knowing that I’m a nutjob.

I also have the rest of my family to be thankful for – for doing the things that family does for one.

The non-human members of the family as well, those uncritical, completely accepting and non-judgmental friends of ours who are often the one thing we can truly count on in our lives.

I am also extremely grateful for having been brought into existence in an age that allows me to be unashamedly hypocritical in my eating habits: I would not be able to kill in order to eat (I let the flies out of the house) but have no issues with eating something someone else has slaughtered. As I said – unashamedly hypocritical. (In another age it would be tubers, twigs and berries all the way for me.)

I’m thankful for the existence of so many fine authors who I’ve enjoyed over the years – both the old and the new.

Thankful for the many friends I’ve made both online and off.

Again, thankful for the unashamedly hypocritical privilege of living in a country that allows me to enjoy the fruits of 90%+ of the rest of the world’s labor (and often at their expense).

And, above all else, I am ecstatically thankful that I once again live in a country that is beginning to put ideals ahead of expediency. “We do these things not because they are easy, but because they are hard.”
