Not the Crud (and) the Book Collection

Turns out that my symptoms of late may be due more to Welbutrin withdrawal than they are to the flu.  No one told me I needed to taper off the W – and I wasn’t needing it (quitting the cigarettes and down to between two and four a day at this point, from 1.5 packs a day – woo hoo!).

Anyway, physical exhaustion, muscle aches and general “flu-like” symptoms are apparentlywhat happens when you stop taking Welbutrin and they catch up with you anywhere from three days to a week after you stop – and then last for as long as two weeks.

Wonderful.

Beyond that, I promised some time ago that I’d provide some video of the book collection.

I’ve embedded some here, completely un-awe-inspiring though it may be.

The best set up I’ve had to date was the house in Florida.  One whole bedroom was devoted to a library.  I had (if I remember correctly) 60 five foot shelves, giving me about 300 feet of shelf space.

This still wasn’t enough – pulp magazines were stacked horizontally and the military history, most other reference materials and the non-SF fiction (thrillers, mysteries, horror) were still in boxes.  Another fifty feet or so of shelving would probably have done the trick.

Of course many years have passed since then and book acquisition has, if anything, picked up in pace.  If I had to guess, I’d say that I probably need between 600 and 800 feet of shelves to display everything ‘the way they ought to be displayed’.

But I have to settle for what I have, and what I have right now is far better than a stack of cardboard boxes.  It is in fact one whole closet and an antique jelly cabinet, plus the promise of multiple shelves down our long hallway between the kitchen and the bedroom. (Karen has said “I don’t want the whole hallway full of books”, so exactly how many shelves, and how long they’ll be has yet to be determined.)

I’m going to go the cinderblock (concrete brick) and pine board route and can put up three or four 12 foot shelves for about fifty bucks.  I’m hoping that once Karen sees how much congestion in the closet was relieved, she’ll let me put up a second set, giving me what is, in effect, three or four twenty foot shelves.  I’ll still have to resort to double stacking and horizontal display, but at least most everything will be OUT, alphabetized and organized.

Here are the vids.  First up – the closet and the jelly cabinet.  The second one is just stacks of boxes inside the bedroom closet.

  1. They don’t look very accessible to me. I want them out where I can touch them, though I admit to double shelving a lot. I have a second bedroom turned into my “study” with desk, computer area and about 400 feet of shelves plus two large CD units. That’s in addition to the bedroom bookcases. The rest are in about 30 boxes in the garage.

    Thanks for showing us.
