ROCK THE HUGO VOTE HAS BEGUN

Keith Graham, noted beekeeper and maintainer of the C3PO Blog wrote in today to let me know that he’s purchased his supporting membership to Aussiecon 4.

I’ve tasked him with finding at least one other person who’ll sign up.

Here’s my receipt from Pay Pal – putting the proverbial money where my mouth is:

Original Transaction
Date Type Status Details Amount
Aug. 11, 2009 Payment To Victorian Science Fiction Conventions Inc Completed -$50.00 USD

Later, Keith and I (and whomever else) will put our heads together and figure out how we’re going to pick the winners…

It’s not a watershed – but it is a start – two new Hugo Award nominators and voters added to the rolls.

Sign up folks – otherwise I’ll have to start doing a real grassroots effort – which will mean buttonholing each and everyone of you.

  1. Based on what I’ve read here, the Hugo voting numbers are amazingly low. It takes very little to alter the course of the Hugo balloting. It should be very easy with just a few dozen more people to control at least one place on the ballot. It might be possible with under a hundred people to control at least one Hugo.

I signed on for the reading material, but the power trip is starting to appeal.

There are a great many outsiders in Speculative Fiction who don’t read the usual suspects in the pro zines. They create little niches in places like SamsDotPublishing or AnotherRealm where they are largely ignored by the rest of Spec Fic and yet produce good fiction. One of these small places on the net could wake up and find themselves very powerful without very much effort.

  2. Actually, I have had a supporting membership to Aussiecon since the voting closed at Denvention. ;)

On the other hand, I’m one of those folks who both nominated and voted in this year’s Hugos, so I’m probably not entirely who you’re looking for.

Also, when it comes to nominations, don’t forget that people who attended Anticipation but don’t have a membership to Aussiecon can nominate. (However, they cannot vote nor do they get the awesome packet.)

I’ve idly thought of starting my own cabal, but that would be trouble. So I’ll join yours. ;)

  3. kat,

ok – we’ll count you as ‘half an add’, lol.

Haven’t forgotten about Anticipation members – they do get to nominate as you said – but it is EQUALLY important for them to have the right to vote. So even if most intend to attend the NASFiC, they still ought to participate in the Hugo voting process for Aussiecon.

Thanks kat – and please help us recruit!

  4. Well, this really sounds cool! Let’s rock the Hugo vote then!
