Making the Case

Every time I see that Air Force commercial featuring a Predator drone, real-time battlefield mapping and Minority Reportesque computer displays – the one that ends with the tagline “It’s Not Science Fiction” – THIS is what keeps on appearing on the screen in my head:

(Check out the new version here)

Seems to me that there’s a great ad campaign for the genre built in here:? wish I’d thought of it during the Apollo 11 40th celebrations (the iconic image of the astronauts saluting the flag, with the LEM in the background and the “IT USED TO BE SCIENCE FICTION” caption; a Dell computers commercial with the Intel Inside replaced with “It Used To Be Science Fiction” (inside); a Tide stain blaster drop-in tablet commercial with the same tagline (anyone who ever got ketchup on their shirt back in the 60’s knows what I’m talkin ’bout); Warren’s Wind Turbine public service promos ending with the tagline; news coverage of? (take your pick – Iran, North Korea, Afghanistan…) with the tagline – and on and on.

Everyone says we’re living in a science fiction world – why not promote it?

EDIT:? I just had to go and create a couple more…

  1. Gary,

mmm, maybe. In my mind it says ’science fiction predicted it’

  2. Orwell was only off 25 years.

  3. Um, because the message seems to be: “Science Fiction: It’s The Past!”
