Son Of Grab Bag Sunday
Reading a science fiction novel by an excellent author: $8.95 (paperback)
Attending Worldcon and meeting some of you faves: $2500 (est)
Seeing some of them at poolside – PRICELESS

Note: Harlan Ellison and Poul Anderson are actually the same height. Poul is wearing the new 'lift' flip-flops in a vain attempt at gaining stature.
You can see this and many more excellent convention photos of authors, editors and artists on Mike Resnick’s facebook page HERE

All I can say is -
JEEZ!

From TLTSNBN: a “defense” of the SYFY name.
Well, ok – except: in yet another (real) attempt at gaining stature, the suits over there have publicly admitted that they were doodling and just happened to come up with changing the ‘Is’ to ‘Ys’.
This is what happens when you write a cover story that doesn’t completely account for the historical facts.? The former SyFyPortal had the name, were paid to give it up (now Airlock Alpha) – (probably signed a non-disparagement clause too) and now one cover story is leading to another as NBC-Universal makes yet another try at legitimizing their stupidity.
You know what would make an excellent story for the channel that wants to ‘imagine greater’?? The Quest For A Name.? Just re-write Lord of the Rings from Sauron’s point of view…

Guess that’s it for now.

Is it entirely impossible for them to have come up with the name Syfy on their own, without knowledge of SyfyPortal, and then opted to make an offer to SyfyPortal after discovering their site?
I didn’t say there was a problem with doodling around with ideas.
It is a well-known fact that the idea was external to any process that went on at SciFi. Rather than admitting that they purchased the name, they have tried to get one story after another to play, and none of them are gaining traction.
Rather than concentrating on decent programming, they’re trying to make it look like they are brilliant with this whole name-change story. It’s bullshit, plain and simple.
I fail to understand why doodling ideas around is such a low thing. That’s how most ideas come into existence: through exploration, and by accident. Furthermore, I fail to see how that fact conflicts with my appreciation of the name and how it works.
This whole idea that the channel’s name needs to be the product of some mystical process of brilliant divine creation is just silly.
