SciFi Channel Changes Name

…to SyFy.? No wonder the portal has changed its name to Airlock Alpha or some such folderol.? Wonder how much they got for giving up their name?? (I hope they at least held out for something substantial – at least thirty ONE pieces of silver…)

Naturally, I must respond.? Therefore, today I announce that SkiffyTube shall henceforth be written as -

SchifeToobe

You can add the funky umlautes or whatever they’re called to provide emPHASis to the proper sylABle.

This change of course demands the return of a long-running feature here on COF, the SchifeToobe SF Purity Rating.

Here it is for the week of March 16, 2009:

SFPR – 19.9%

It’s only above 10% because of the BSG spasm they’re having later on in the week.? Frakkin Bull Shit Grande.

The report on the name comes via Gateworld News, which includes an interesting quote from the head suit in charge at SyFy:

?We couldn?t own Sci Fi; it?s a genre,? Hammer said. ?But we can own Syfy.?

“We couldn’t own the cow, but we can own the crap.”? Delivered, no doubt, with an ear-to-ear shit-eating grin.

The minute I see ‘SyFy’ plastered on a book, I’m leaving the planet…

Once again – DUCK DODGERS IN THE TWENTY-FOUR AND A HALFTH CENTURY is now viewable on The Classic Science Fiction Channel.? Now, other than a crass attempt to get you to go visit my website, why would I bring that up?

Because Matt at Enter the Octopus got very serious on us the other day and delivered some oratory on why Geeks should not be taking social-abuse from?fellow neanderthals.

He (rightfully) points out that we’re the ones willing to leave the safety of the fire and often the ones that return with goodies that can improve the lot for the entire tribe.? (No doubt it was a geek who picked up the first fiery, lightning-struck branch.? The rest of society is still trying to figure out why they keep getting burned when they pick it up by the?flamey part.)

Matt lays his ire at the doorstep of the need for acceptance.? I agree.? I think all of the geeks need to abdicate.? Let’s all find an island,?rename it Geekland and move there enmasse.? Inside of 6 months it will be the world’s leading arts and technology exporter.? And we won’t need an army or security services because geeks can invent shit like FORCE FIELDS.

  1. Is it April 1st? No, but I thought it was when I saw your comments the name change to SyFy.

    WTF?!

After BSG ends on Friday I will no longer have any reason to watch this screwed up network.

  2. You got that right! You’ll be leading our paintball brigades. We need training for when we finally invent those plasma rifles!

  3. Why do “the powers that be” think they’ve come up with a bright idea. What exactly was wrong with “SiFi” that makes “SyFy” soooo much better?

Help! The inmates are running the asylum!

  4. Are the techy geeks going to let us nerds who think it’s cool to play in dirt and figure out the best ways to make things grow come along? If so, count me in!

  5. I say anyone who likes to ‘do stuff’ is welcome.

Matt – non-lethal plasma rifles. Otherwise we’ll run out of targets way too fast.

  6. I’m surprised skiffy actually kept some connection with their former name — I always figured they’d change to something along the lines of spike TV, and try to distance themselves from ’scifi.’

The new name is about on par with the quality of one of their original movies.

  7. good article, thanks for this useful info, I have dug and stumbled this article. I will keep visiting for more useful information.
