TRAVELLING
TO THE RIM
One
of the many ways that I am gathering clues (and checking for
inconsistencies) is by charting out the travel routes or 'tramlines'
described in the stories. Shipping over the ocean is a well-established
enterprise, having taken at least half a millenia to arrive
at its current state of efficiency and perfection. The reasons
for doing things the way they are done in that business are
a mystery to me, but given the history, I think its pretty sensible
to come to the conclusion that there are good reasons
behind it. Big lines make the long hauls, smaller lines fill
in the gaps. Specialty lines serve specialty purposes and, if
there's an economic hole somewhere, a solution will be found
to fill it.
All
of the above is reflected in the manner in which ships and shipping
lines are used in the stories. By cataloging the various tramlines,
travel times, imports and exports, I'll be able to make additional,
well-grounded inferences. One presumption is that there will
be more traffic to the more heavily populated regions of the
galaxy and less traffic out to the sticks. Another presumption
is that if a particular planet is exporting a given commodity,
that planet must be heavily engaged in that particular enterprise
(otherwise there would not be enough surplus available for profitable
export).
I've
chosen to organize the data gathered so far in the form of a
shipping schedule, one that might be found on a monitor in the
terminal at Port Remote.

RIM RUNNERS
Get there before you think about leaving!
Rim
Runners is the pride of the Rim Worlds Confederacy. All ships
owned and operated by Rim Runners Pty, a wholly owned and independently
operated subsidiary of the Rim Worlds Confederacy Government.
All Rim Runners ships are also enrolled as Auxillaries in the
Rim Worlds Naval Reserve and as such can be recalled to active
duty without advance notice to passengers.
Rim
Runners provides regular passenger and freight services to Lorn,
Faraway, Ultimo, Thule and the Eastern Circuit, including Mellise,
Grollor, Tharn and Stree. Rim Runners also provides connecting
service to Caribbea, Carinthia and the Shakespearian Sector.
All
passenger ships equipped with Manschenn Interstellar Drive.
Ride in comfort aboard our newly refurbished Delta and Epsilon
class ships! Freight may be transported using Manschenn or Ehrenhaft
drive at Rim Runner’s sole discretion.
'NEW!'
Lightjammer Service to be initiated to the anti-matter worlds!
Following tests and trial runs, Rim Runners is pleased to announce
the introduction of a new class of interstellar sailing vessels
- the Lightjammer - and will now be offering service to the
worlds of the Llanithi Consortium from Port Erikson. The first
such ship, Flying Cloud, was commissioned by Rim Runner's own
Astronautical Superintendent Commodore Grimes and commanded
by Captain Ralph Listowel. During Flying Cloud's shakedown cruise,
Captain Listowel and his crew discovered an entirely new method
of faster-than-light travel and inadvertently also discovered
the means that will make trade with and travel to the anti-matter
worlds possible. Following this wonderful discovery, Rim Runners
immediately commissioned a number of additional lightjammers
to service this new trade route. Flying Cloud is joined by Pamir,
Lord of the Isles, Sea Witch, Herzogen Cecile, Preussen and
Garthpool.
Please
note: By accepting passage aboard a Rim Runners vessel, passengers
accept the sole responsibility for any loss, delay, injury,
inadvertent time travel or death which may result as a consequence
of the use of Faster-Than-Light means of space travel, acts
of odd-gods or acts of war and which are not the result of negligence
on the part of Rim Runners, its agents, employees or representatives.
For further information, please see the document “Space
Travel Act” available from any RWC printing office.
