BOOK & MAGAZINE SELLERS LINKS

Searching for Chandler materials can be fun – and frustrating. Over the years I have developed some resources that have helped. I’ve also developed a few techniques designed to save me money.

Here’s my methodology: first, check to see if any of my regular suppliers (below) has the item. Next, check their prices for the same item on ABE. Finally, go with the lowest. (True, it did not take genius to work this technique out, but many people are apt to buy something at the first place they see it...)

I’ve got a few sources that I’m not willing to share, if only because I’m still trying to obtain a few very rare items. (Sorry, but you have to cover your own fundament first…)

I strongly recommend the following as ‘first sources’:

www.abe.com - Advanced Book Exchange – the ‘Amazon’ of REAL bookstores

www.booksareeverything - the website for Graham Holroyd who has a vast inventory, always grades things correctly and actually communicates with buyers in a timely manner (which is uncommon for old book/pulp sellers it seems)

www.oldsfbooks.com - the website for the enigmatic Ray Bowman of Fantastic Collectibles. Ray usually has what you are looking for, but he takes a long time getting around to filling orders. That’s no big deal as he goes to great lengths to insure you understand this before ordering.

Robert Madle – the SF fan who put the ‘collecting’ in Fandom. Robert is a great, knowledgeable guy who it has been my privilege to meet on numerous occasions and do business with. (Maaaany years ago he was genuinely upset that he could not meet my needs for an Amazing Vol 1, No 1: I found one eventually…and I hope you are as jealous of me as I was of anyone who had one when I didn’t…). Unfortunately, Robert is not on the web, but he does produce a great catalog. Call or write for one: 301-460-4712 or Robert Madle, 4406 Bestor Drive, Rockville, MD 29853.

www.ebay.com - go to the Books category and then select either Science Fiction (under books), or Pulps or Science Fiction under magazine back issues. I’ve found some good buys there – but I always check the asking price against the folks listed previously first. Don’t forget to add the shipping costs.

www.Amazon.com - very often, someone is selling their copy of a Chandler book as used for as little as a dollar. Go here regularly and check often.

www.SFBC.com - if all you are looking for are the John Grimes stories, go sign up with the SF Book Club – you can get all six of the Chandler collections for $5.99 with your initial registration and membership bonus. I’m sure you can find 4 other books to fill out your membership requirements. You won’t have the classic collectible versions of the stories, but you will have all of the Grimes stories that have been published in one nice set.
